Life Member, Lorna Ackerman recalls:
“In our scrap book of SNKC’s history, I find an item referring to the Southern Tier Kennel Club sponsoring its first local show at 127 Court Street on January 30, 1926. The Chairman was Ann K. Duncan, the wife of a local veterinarian. At the risk of divulging my age, I must admit that I remember that show. Mrs. Duncan was a personal friend of my mother and she insisted that out of respect for Mrs. Duncan, I must put my dog in that show.”
We do not know if the Southern Tier Kennel Club was the forerunner of Susque-Nango, but we do know that SNKC came into existence in the early 40’s. It was organized by a small but dedicated group of dog lovers and had a group of sponsors who could qualify as the Who’s Who of the Southern Tier. Our first show held on November 9, 1947 was sponsored by Edwin Link, local inventor and founder of Link Flight Simulation, Mrs. Charles F. Johnson Jr., wife of the President of Endicott Johnson Corp., Willis Sharpe Kilmer, owner of Sunbriar Stables and the world famous horse, Exterminator, George Raymond, President of Raymond Corp. in Greene, Mrs. Leon Rhodes, wife of the NYS Supreme Court Justice and Thomas J. Watson, President and founder of IBM, to name a few.
Today, SNKC is still an active organization and a Member Club of the American Kennel Club. Being a Member Club, we send a voting delegate to the quarterly AKC meetings. SNKC is one of the approximately 500 member clubs with voting privileges
